Gemma & Brent's wedding day was full of vibrance and energy. The groomsmen were up really early and showed unusual levels of activity first thing on a wedding day. Maybe this had a little to do with breakfast watching England against France in the rugby world cup! A great way to start off the day.

Testing lighting conditions, looking straight into a very bright sun, also give opportunities to exploit a different look for some pictures.

Soon everyone was concentrating heavily on the match, with a few opinions about whether the ref was right or not!

There certainly was more urgency with the girls as they arrived from the hairdressers with lots to do. They got ready at the Farmhouse where the reception was to be held later. Again I enjoyed the atmospheric lighting conditions.

Gemma's dress had some exquisite detailing in the lacework.

The weather was perfect. I reckon out of all the weddings I have done this year, this was the sunniest and calmest day. Strange that we had to wait until mid-October for this to happen. The service was at St. Martin's church with Reverend Tracy Charmley.

Nerves? No, I am sure Brent was more worried about Australia vs New Zealand the next morning!

Rory got everyone tapping as he sang and played his guitar during the register signing.

We had a very quick stop for a few pictures on our way to the Farmhouse for the reception.

The dining area was beautifully laid out, with a bright, white theme.

I must say that I found the speeches to be some of the most entertaining I have heard at a wedding.

James had a particularly humorous poem he had written, mainly about how the couple had met.

Rory's guitar was made by a very appropriately named manufacturer, so it was natural I photographed the rings on it.

After a bit of impromptu dancing, singing and guitar playing, the somewhat acrobatic first dance took place. This was soon followed by further energetic displays on the dance floor!

What an amazing day this was, a great mix of people from opposite ends of the world who certainly know how to enjoy themselves.

Just a shame about the rugby the following day...

Lucy & Brendan

Lucy & Brendan are a couple with whom I have a fair bit in common, a love of the sea, climbing and photography. So we were really looking forward to this event.

Lucy and the bridesmaids were a bit late back from the hairdressers, but there was no panic and everyone got ready in time for the cars to take them to the church. I love pictures like the one I start this blog with, it tells a story as well as being a fascinating image.

The dress and accessories were beautiful, in particular the shoes! Notice the anchor, there will be other images following the nautical theme later.

Meanwhile my wife and assistant Karen was photographing the groomsmen who seemed to be enjoying their hats.

The dress required those nearby to be careful where they stood.

Matthew, the pageboy, led everyone into St. Joseph's Church at the perfect pace.

We are always on the look out for those little details that can make a strong picture.

A breezy day meant the veil was in constant need of some prompt action!

We had a brief stop at the park for pictures, then onward to the Farmhouse for the reception.

Once again the dining area had been decorated in stunning fashion, a few more anchors to continue the theme.

Speeches drew a few tears and many laughs.

The Boulangerie was responsible for this skilfully made cake, no surprises about the decorations. An attractive cheese tower was there for anyone who felt hungry later that evening.

No, you don't want to use that toy knife - try this instead! A sword was offered up by one of the bestmen...

Lucy's time in America was recognised with the USA themed pick 'n mix table, some great details there.

The first dance kicked off a busy last few hours as the dance floor saw some energetic activity.

Being a keen photographer Brendan was interested to see what I could create later that evening, we got some stunning images of which this is one.

The day wound down with a slower dance, an intimate way to complete the celebrations. Have a great time on honeymoon Brendan and Lucy, you had an amazing day.

Donna & Stuart

Donna & Stuart got married on a rather blustery day this month. But, except for the odd shower, this didn't affect the day.

I am always on the look out for any off beat compositions and details, so I was pleased with the way this scene tells a story.

The dress and accessories were fun to cover, with lots of exquisite detailing.

Donna was ready in plenty of time, giving us the chance for a few portraits before I had to make my way to the church.

The groomsmen met at the Longfrie and then had a short stroll to St. Peter's Church for the service. There has got to be a message in this picture...

The interior of the church had been decorated in spectacular fashion, clearly a lot of effort had gone into this. We were also treated to a brass band, this created a great atmosphere.

A heavy shower blew by quickly so we could emerge from the church.

Thank you to Rena & Jim for the use of their meticulous garden for a few pictures on our way to the Farmhouse for the reception.

The Farmhouse had been decorated with similar attention to the church, well worth the effort.

This gift certainly seemed well received, we try very hard to capture these precious and fleeting moments.

I couldn't resist adding this image to the blog, it illustrates perfectly the events that we are constantly on the look out for.

Some danced while some sat outside and enjoyed the conversation.

Now I thought his dancing was pretty good...

A breath of fresh air gave us the chance to take a few pictures in the gardens.

Back to the dance floor - which Stuart had managed to avoid so far. But as the last song was played he was dragged onto the floor amidst much cheering. A great end to a beautiful day.

Dawn & Darren

This wedding was characterised with a really relaxed feeling all day. Things were running a touch late with the preparations but everyone arrived at St. James in good time.

I couldn't resist this little juxtaposition of dad...

By co-incidence at virtually the same time as Dawn came downstairs, Darren walked into St. James after a quick drink with his groomsmen.

The reception was at a marquee at Les Cotils. Fortunately, we had a nice quiet day weather wise, a big contrast to the gales and rain earlier in the week. The interior of the marquee was delightfully decorated.

Now if you put a jokey comment about special dietary requirements for your menu choice, don't be surprised if your wish is granted!

Speeches took place between courses and contained some rather emotional moments.

Did he really say that...?!!

Dawn and Darren's daughter Hope was beautifully behaved all day, quite a notable feat.

A tranquil scene outside, a busy and noisy scene inside.

We had time for a quick picture before Dawn and Darren had a short walk home. What a marvellous day everyone had.

Danielle & David

One of the sweetest couples I have worked with. We worked over the winter and spring together on an engagement book too, so by the weding we knew each other pretty well. This certainly helps on the wedding day.

Conveniently the church, St. Peter's, was only round the corner from Danielle's parent's house where she got ready. This made things much easier on the day.

Danielle really looked so beautiful. I have to mention that she passed her final accountancy exams, the results came in the day before her wedding! Well done, that must have been such a weight off your mind.

The groomsmen met close by at the Longfrie for a quick drink before the short stroll to the church.

It is always a very moving time when the bride and her father walk up the aisle.

An Uncle of Danielle's gave a sermon, this was very personal, touching and much appreciated by all present.

Cupcakes outside the church made a welcome snack for some!

The reception was held at The Venue, the gardens at the Fermain Valley Hotel are always one of my favourites. The weather was still and dry, quite perfect for a drinks reception outside before the meal.

This could be described as the decisive moment...

The speeches took place before food was served.

Special mention must be made of the wedding cake, specially made by the groom's mother.

All too soon the first dance was upon us, the day seemed to go quickly.

The following picture carries a health warning!

Danielle threw the bouquet so far the first time that it landed well behind the DJ, so we had a re-run.

The wonderful day drew to a close with the couple's last dance, surrounded by all their closest friends and family. A fitting way to complete a great wedding.

Sharon & Paul

Sharon and Paul got married last Saturday and this proved to be a long day, but rewarding from the point of photographic opportunities.

An early service time meant an early start at the hairdressers.

This next picture is one of my recent favourites, some decorating work at the hairdressers gave me a juxtaposition I had to wait patiently for.

Back at Sharon's flat there wasn't much time to waste before they were getting into their outfits.

Kofi, Sharon's father was very excited to see his daughter. Sharon was undoubtedly one of the most beautiful brides I have photographed.

How many bouquets can you hold in one go?

The service was at St. Stephen's Church.

The reception was conveniently just down the road at St. Pierre Park Hotel.

We are always on the look out for those moments that others miss.

Some last second adjustments as the couple are announced into the reception.

It was the bestman's birthday, but he took his duties seriously. He delivered one of the funniest speeches I have heard at a wedding.

The evening entertainment started off with the first dance.

There was a very close call on the bouquet tossing.

This crowd danced energetically until well after midnight. Sharon and Paul also rounded off the dancing with an athletic display. A fitting end to a vibrant day.

Charlotte & Adrian

Another special day for the wedding of Charlotte & Adrian, a couple with a quite remarkable variety of backgrounds. So it was no surprise to see things done a little differently.

Charlotte's was not the typical outfit, it suited her beautifully.

Now as a man I am probably not expected to get too excited about a bride's shoes, but these certainly were stunning and I could have continued to find different ways to photograph them if time permitted. It seemed a shame for Charlotte to walk in them and mark those exquisitely detailed soles.

The morning was rather hectic, an early start at the hairdressers, then a trip to the Bella Spa for make-up, a further check at the hairdressers then back to mum's house to get changed. Dad did some final tweaks to his speech as the girls finished their preparations.

At least the distances between locations was short, the ceremony was a humanist blessing conducted by Jayne White. It was held at the Bella Luce Hotel, the weather was fine for the service to be outdoors and the setting was perfect.

A bit of amusement as a passing plane drowned out proceedings for a brief while.

The decor in the marquee was amazing, the tables were called after dinosaurs!

Justin, now it's your turn...

A big thank you to Justin for being an extremely good and useful bestman, from organising the family groups efficiently to holding some photographic equipment for me.

Guess who the band was? Specially reformed by Matt, the bride's brother.

Not sure if this cup-cake eating contest was a good idea, I still don't know who won.

Nikita & Aldonio

This wedding took place on what was probably the hottest, sunniest day this August. The groomsmen had a great fried breakfast, with champagne, at Pembroke. This was followed by a quick swim, apparently a well needed hangover cure!

Aldo didn't seem quite so keen to jump in as others.

The bride and bridesmaids got ready at mum's house. It was a bit hot to be getting into dresses too early.

The twins looked very smart, but little Josh was a bit more reluctant to get into his outfit.

St. Martin's Church was conveniently only round the corner.

This picture says so much!

Then they were sped off to Petit Bot, this was a busy place given the gorgeous weather. Balloons were released in memory of Aldo's father.

The reception took place at La Trelade Hotel. The dining room was beautifully decorated.

The speeches were very emotional.

The children were kept amused by a magician, some played more sedately than others!

Soon it was time for the dancing, there certainly was some energetic activity.

We managed to slip out for a few pictures outside, then it was time for the final dance. What a fantastic day it was.

Jackie & Ben

This blog has taken me a bit longer to post than expected so apologies if you have been waiting for a quick look at the images.

Jackie and Ben had a great day for their wedding, they even managed to combine the christening of their daughter with the wedding. This was a first for me, I have covered weddings and christenings as separate events, but never both together before. As Ben said, they have never done things the normal way!

It was a busy morning, but everyone was ready on time to get to the church.

I really enjoy little moments like this, one has to be quick to observe and capture them though!

The groomsmen had a quick drink at the Cornerstone, then a bit of a brush down for Ben before the trip to St. Stephen's Church.

It was rather a hot day, cloudy, but still hot especially for those fully suited up.

I went for a bit of a creative interpretation as Jackie was escorted up the aisle. St. Stephen's always looks spectacular, it is the largest church in the Channel Islands.

After the service we had time for a few pictures, we also stopped off at Saint's Harbour on the way to the Bella Luce Hotel for the reception.

I love clouds like this, they make for a dramatic monochrome image, trouble is this normally means impending rain!

There wasn't much opportunity for drinks in the garden as those lovely clouds soon gave us extremely heavy rain until dusk. But never mind, everyone retreated to the well decorated marquee and the speeches followed prior to the meal.

Mr. Happy seemed to have the right idea with a ready pint!

As night approached the first dance took place, the marquee was beautifully lit up inside and out.

Everyone seemed to have a great deal of fun.

We finished off with a few pictures at night to complete a memorable day.

Lucy & Gary

Wow, what a day this was!

Lucy & Gary are a couple full of energy so this was a packed day, with so many beautiful moments.

I covered the bride's side of the preparations from the hairdresser onwards.

Lucy really did look so special.

Uncle Paul arrived to take Lucy to St. James.

Meanwhile my wife and assistant Karen was photographing the groom's preparation.

Just when you need your speech to be printed out there's bound to be some trouble!

But a bit of light hearted practice at St. James, followed by a drink, soon calmed any nerves.

Luckily it didn't rain for long when the bride arrived...

Jayne White conducted a very touching humanist ceremony.

There were a lot of dancers and singers at this event. We were treated to such gorgeous singing, it made the hairs on my neck stand up. Cait, one of the bridesmaids, was the first to sing.

Then a specially choreographed dance for this wedding, in memory of Lucy's dad Terry. The emotions were heightened even further by such a sensitive and beautiful display by the dancers from Avril Earl's studio. They are keen to do performances at events like weddings, so please get in touch with them if this appeals to you.

I also tried to add a bit of my own artistry to this event. Before anyone asks, as I state in my classes and lectures, I believe in getting as much right in camera, so no software trickery involved in this picture.

Just when people thought it was safe to put the tissues away, we had a couple of songs from Ella. There probably wasn't a dry eye left in the building.

A few pictures, some champagne for the guests and then onto the Farmhouse for the reception.

Cup-cake heaven for fans of cup-cakes. Not sure who had the idea for the design of the figures on the top though!

Thank you to Avril for ensuring the groups were all standing exactly as they were meant to be! Also a big thank you to Benita, the maid of honour, you ensured Lucy was well looked after and made sure I had all I needed too.

The speeches kept everyone laughing throughout.

The evening entertainment was based around the Rat Pack Boys, what amazing talent they have.

The first dance had an enthralled audience.

Colin had travelled from London with his saxophone, yet another demonstration of talent at this wedding. I wasn't going to waste this opportunity for a few pictures.

Now I didn't realise Lucy could sing too!

This appeared to be a bit of a dance lesson.

Gary, I know your dancing is up to it, but you do seem to be the odd man out here...

This was a long day that seemed to go very quickly. I was still buzzing with it all well into the next day.

Aimee & Luis

This was a wedding that I was looking forward to a lot. A delightfully sweet couple who I felt I knew pretty well as we had worked together a few times in photographing their guest book for the wedding. My impression is that Aimee always seems to have a ready smile, Luis rarely stops laughing.

I just couldn't resist this cute Jemima Puddle-Duck name plate when I photographed Aimee's dress.

Brides don't come much prettier than this...

Luis was a little shy when he was getting ready, but we managed a few pictures of him.

The flowers at the church, and later at the reception, were quite spectacular.

I always enjoy St. Peter's Church, one reason is that I was married there myself, rather a long time ago now (like over 22 years ago!)

A very brief stop for pictures and onto the Farmhouse for the reception. The dining area was notable for the flowers again and everything looked rather special.

Dad possibly took longer to get ready than his daughter with his Scottish outfit, but he looked a distinguished figure when giving his speech.

The speeches were rather emotional at times.

There was not just one cake, but two. Both very striking.

The couple's happiness was obvious during the first dance, then all ages took full advantage of the music to dance the night away. The band was John Inder's Jamali, I hadn't heard them before and thought that they were great.

The still, warm evening encouraged people to stay out in the garden.

A truly lovely wedding day slowly came to an end.

Natalie & Joel

This was quite a spectacular wedding, with lovely weather and superb venues.

Natalie was ready in plenty of time which gave us a relaxed morning, time for a few portraits and family and bridesmaids pictures.

Onto the Vale Church.

Joel looked a bit worried, for a brief moment, but soon burst into a big smile on seeing his bride come up the aisle.

There was a drinks reception at Castle Cornet, what a splendid venue for this.

The final location for the meal and evening entertainment was at St. James, this had been decorated so beautifully.

Dad's speech about the shopping experiences for the wedding was highly amusing. Joel's two brothers, Luke and Guy, were best men and so did a great double act for their speech.

Of course brothers are bound to know a few embarassing memories about the groom!

Such a beautiful moment and backdrop for the first dance.

There were a lot hoping to get the chance to grab the bouquet. Not sure how it missed the lights!

A couple of pictures outside and back to the dancing. This was the second time I have heard the Devotees in a fortnight, always a band to look forward to.

This was a well planned and special day, a great way to start Natalie & Joel's marriage.

Alisha & Carl

Mid July doesn't normally produce the weather we had for this wedding, a gale and some rather heavy rain. But the weather is one thing we cannot control, so I always tell people to have a great time whatever the elements throw at us. Yes, it can give me some practical problems but then it is up to your photographer to deal with things and produce the goods despite the difficulties.

Alisha's dress was very beautiful and I made good use of the textures and patterns for a few detail shots.

The house was a bit hectic, but we managed to fit in some portraits of Alisha when she was ready.

Bride and groom got ready at the furthest corners of the island from each other, but we managed to fit in everyone.

Fortunately the worst of the weather held back for the beginning of the service at the Vale Church.

Then back out into the rain....

While at the park things really opened up...

The reception was at La Grande Mare Hotel.

This wedding was notable for the large contingent of children, all well behaved and having fun even though it was too wet and windy for the planned bouncy castle.

The dancing was popular and suited all ages.

Some were particularly athletic...

While others watched quietly from a safe distance...

We also managed a brief break to catch the full moon rising.

All in all a wonderful day.

Katja & Vinny

I was trying to keep last weekend free, with the intention of having a well earned holiday with the family and watching the Tour de France. But then Vinny got in touch and explained he was getting married. They insisted that our work really was the only photography that they felt resonated with them, well I am not good at saying no! Plus I had known Vinny before and knew that whatever he was involved in was going to be exceptionally lively.

We also met a few times before the wedding and produced a stunning engagement album which was used as a guest signing book at the reception.

Katja had her mum to help her get ready, also Lena did her hair and make-up. Lena does an amazing job as you will see, we wish her the best of luck with her move to London.

Mum's pride in her beautiful daughter was very evident.

Vinny was getting ready at a friend's house with Jake, his son, who was also the best man. Jake is only 13 years old, but with a maturity that exceeds many twice his age. He ably carried out his duties all day and his speech was excellent.

The service was held at St. James. Katja arrived with her Father in a lovely vintage car.

Vinny actually sang to his new wife on stage, such an emotional rendition of Elton John's "Your Song", many were moved to tears. Few people have such a powerful and beautiful voice.

A quick stop for a few pictures on the way to the Grand Mare Hotel for the reception. Katja also had an unbelievably rapid repair to her dress on the way to the hotel. If there are any brides who need to have an emergency repair, remember Katie from Wedding Belles!

I had already experienced a Czechoslovakian plate breaking at a wedding earlier this year, but here we had a German log cutting by the couple, plus a few other games that were very amusing to watch.

The speeches were entertaining, we benefited from both German and English versions. Katja's Father's speech in english was very well received, as apparently he doesn't speak english! A few more German traditional wedding games followed too.

The master of ceremonies was also wonderfully entertaining!

A construction that wasn't quite what it seemed: it was made of toilet rolls that contained a fair number of £50 notes.

Not only were we treated to a spectacular sunset, but a double rainbow appeared specially for the couple.

I was prepared for a wild evening with this crowd, they didn't disappoint! The Devotees got the crowd rocking. Of course Vinny had to do a number with his Dad and they blasted out "Mustang Sally" like I had never heard before.

We finish off with a very appropriate image that sums up the energy of the event.

Jane & Russell

Jane and Russell are such a sweet couple. After meeting a few times to photograph them for their engagement album I felt we knew each other pretty well, this certainly helps on the wedding day. The whole day was relaxed and full of emotion.

We started our coverage at the hairdressers.

Jane got ready in plenty of time, giving us the opportunity to take a few family pictures before departing for the church.

Ellie was delightful throughout the day, Mum and the bridesmaids looked pretty smart too.

Russell and his groomsmen got ready at his house and found time to fit in a quick beer at the Rockmount before heading to the church.

On arrival at the church Jane showed no nerves that all.

A quick stop for some pictures on the way to the Bella Luce Hotel for the reception. The weather was glorious.

Ellie tried to steal the show all day...

The interior of the marquee was amazing. The speeches reflected the emotion of the day, generating a few tears and lots of laughter.

Jane's old tricycle had undergone a full restoration job, Ellie soon put it to it's intended use!

The cake was exquisite, full of fine detailing.

As night approached the tranquil image of the marquee hid the activity that was going on inside.

The Bandits provided the music and kept the dance floor active.

After a very long day we finished off with a few pictures, what a great way to end the coverage.

Claire & Eric

During the speeches it was noted that this wedding was all about the couple's friends and family, this was so very true. A more people centred wedding is rarely encountered, this circle of friends seemed exceptionally close.

Claire looked very special, with her bridesmaids.

Eric was also very relaxed and making the most of having the chance of a chat and a laugh.

Soon Claire had arrived at St. James, always a spectacular location. The emotions were plainly visible, they just looked so happy.

We had a quick stop at Candie Gardens before the reception at Les Rocquettes.

I hadn't been to Les Rocquettes since the leaving party of my good friend Alex Wallace when he left for New Zealand, Derek from the hotel sends his best regards Alex if you're reading this. The interior was beautifully decorated and the food was much appreciated.

The speeches were a great laugh, some of those jokes may have been old ones, but I still found them funny! There was no evening dance, just more mingling and mixing with great friends, that's what this event was all about.

Annette & Andrew

Annette & Andy's wedding was a relaxed and initmate day. We had the opportunity to take some lovely pictures of the children in the morning with Annette.

The groomsmen got ready just a short walk from St. James where the ceremony took place.

Annette was obviously excited to see everyone waiting for her as she arrived.

After the ceremony we all stayed at St. James for a while, a good chance for the newly weds to meet all their family and friends, all the while accompanied to the music of Colin Falla.

The reception was held at the Farmhouse Hotel, again beautifully decorated by Tessa and her team at Amour Weddings.

Not one, but two best men gave speeches. They provided a great insight into the life and antics of the groom!

Plus one of the bestmen had a little birthday surprise awaiting him.

There is always lots to photograph at any wedding, this one was no different.

How about this for a gentle game of croquet.......

As the sun set the evening fun commenced.

The youngsters did a lot of dancing, yet some perferred a more static form of entertainment.

Victoria & Matthew

Victoria and Matthew's wedding took place on an absolutely glorious day, sunny, warm and light winds. One drawback of this was that the surf was non-existent, so the boys had to make do with a bit of fun playing with stones on the beach.

With something a bit more dramatic....

Matthew looked rather cool as they got ready.

Meanwhile Victoria and her bridesmaids were very relaxed as they paddled their feet while sipping champagne and strawberries, a very pleasant way to spend a sunny morning.

The wedding dress had some exquisite detailing, Victoria was obviously excited and looked so pretty.

Onto the Vale Church, all in good time, in fact a few minutes early.

That heart shaped confetti was beautiful as it fluttered from the deep blue sky.

Harsh sunlight can give a few problems for photography, but it is my job to also create opportunities. We made the most of a quick stop at the common on the way to the reception at the Bella Luce Hotel.

With such lovely weather the guests made the most of the garden party atmosphere.

Unsurprisingly we were treated to some eloquent and amusing speeches before the dancing commenced.

As night fell the setting was perfect for a great finale for such a wonderful couple. Best wishes for your future together Vicky and Matthew.

This certainly was a wedding with a difference, vibrant and colourful throughout.

I started with the hairdressers, this can take quite a long time, but there are always some good moments to capture needing concentration not to miss the best expressions and to find strong compositions in the confines of a busy salon.

One of my favourite images that really tells a story

I am always pleased to try to take any specially requested pictures. This is one rather sweet and elderly lady that a lot of people are rather fond of....

While the bride and bridesmaids were continuing their preparations it was time to see what the groom was up to. Laid back and relaxed was one way to describe things, while everyone else was fully dressed Oby was still walking around with a towel around his waist!

The best man also had to perform a bit of hairdressing himself!

Is this a small sign of a few nerves?

Susan looked really stunning.

Weddings with Rev. Northover at the Vale Church are always entertaining, with everyone having a great time.

The children were impeccably behaved throughout the day,

There are also off beat moments to look out for, as well as the obvious moments to photograph.

Karen, my wife and assistant, is good at spotting a good opportunity as below.

The couple were transported in a stunning Riley car, we found time for a quick stop for some pictures on the way to La Grande Mare Hotel for the reception. It was nice to make use of some spring colour.

Talking of colour, the couple changed to traditional Nigerian costumes when they arrived for the reception. All I can say is wow, what amazing outfits. I love events which bring a mix of cultures.

The speeches took place before the food and provided plenty of funny moments.

With night falling we popped out briefly to take a couple of pictures between courses.

As I mentioned before, quite breathtaking outfits. I was pleased to take something that captured the mood and colours so effectively.

One more change for the bride, as Susan went back into her wedding dress for the first dance. This was a beautiful and touching moment before everyone else joined in on the dance floor.

All ages joined in with obvious enthusiasm, I don't think I have ever seen such smooth dancing at a wedding reception, wonderful.

Finally the day drew to a close, this certainly was a memorable event. Best wishes to Susan and Oby for their future together.

Guernsey Choral and Orchestral Society

What better way to get into the festive spirit of Christmas than to go to the Guernsey Choral and Orchestral Society Christmas Concert. Last Saturday evening there was a distinct winter chill outside, even some snow remained on the pavements of Town from earlier in the day. I was at St. James to take a few pictures of the proceedings. I have been too busy to put much on my blog recently, but couldn't resist a few images of this event.

Light conditions at such events are always an extreme challenge, but Guernsey is so lucky to have such a beautiful building for events like this. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, the music and singing were amazing. All this set against the stunning interior as you can see in the images below. I am more used to seeing St. James decorated for weddings, this time we had all the Christmas decorations.

The main picture we wanted was to get the orchestra and choir together prior to the commencement of the evening.

I am used to being discreet and unobtrusive and this is essential for jobs of this nature. It is of the utmost importance to me not to disturb anyone's enjoyment of the evening. So where I was able to I took the opportunity to take a few other compositions, there is always a host of photographs to take at events like this.

After the interval the children came on stage, this is always delightful.

I am always on the look out for something different and visually exciting, I really enjoy the next image, though it was tricky to get the right moment with the conductor's actions.

We were treated to an expressive narration of a Christmas story before Father Christmas made an apperance!

I was able to take a few shots of some of the musicians.

The evening drew to a close with the audience participating in some carols, I certainly felt that this evening really meant that Christmas was almost here. There will be further pictures for viewing very shortly from the Buy Prints, Events area of my website.

Katie & Ben

Katie & Ben had a wonderful winter wedding. Beautifully themed and detailed throughout, this was a pleasure to cover. Appropriately we will start with a selection of details of the jewellery and accessories.

The morning was fairly hectic, an early service necessitated a bit of running around to fit everything in from both the bride and groom's perspective.

Fortunately my wife and assistant Karen covered the groomsmen having a swift drink and walking to the church.

The service was held at Notre Dame, a church I have memories of as a child. I still admire the architecture and the stunning roof design. Karen was able to cover a few nice moments before the bride arrived at the church.

A brief stop for pictures on the way to The Venue for the reception meant we had to put up with a cold and brisk wind. But no sign of the previously forecast heavy rain.

The reception area was really delightful, the winter theme was perfect. Here's a small selection of the details we found.

The speeches took place before the meal, the participants were then free to enjoy their food with no further duties to worry about!

No respite for myself though, rings, flowers and a cake to photograph. I was especially pleased with this creative shot of the rings, it took me a while to execute with a bit of ingenuity, but the result was well worth it.

The early darkness gave us even more opportunity to have some fun with whatever light was available. I love low light challenges.

As the evening progreesed it was time to take to the dance floor. Some took the chance to get a bit of practice in before Katie & Ben took to the floor.

The young and not quite as young took to the floor.

While some chose a more modern form of entertainment.

Some frantic activity saw out the evening.

Eventually the night came to an end and the party was over. A truly memorable day.

Alicia & Michael

Another special wedding. With the groom being from the United States, we were privileged to have a fair number of visitors from that country. I enjoy events with a mix of different cultures as this always brings a different aspect to them. There was a busy start to the day, juggling taking pictures at the hairdressers and covering the groom's and bride's preparations.

How many does it take...?

We just had time to take a few pictures of the stunning bride before the church service.

It looks like there's some last minute advice being given out here!

Michael appeared very relaxed as he waited for his bride.

A stop at the park before the reception at the Farmhouse.

A cleverly spotted composition at the reception by my wife and assistant Karen.

The speeches were hugely entertaining, Nick the bride's father seemed to enjoy himself immensely!

The remainder of the day was to the accompaniment of the appropriately named band The States, always something I look forward to. After the first dance, the rest of the evening saw some pretty frenzied dancing.

A fantastic day for Alicia & Michael to start off their married life together.

Sophie & Simon

Sophie and Simon had quite a memorable day. There was great humour throughout and the meticulous planning and attention to detail well worthwhile.

The make up and hair was done at Sophie's parents house, this meant that there was less travelling around for us to do. More time for pictures!

Sophie looked absolutely beautiful.

At the church, St. Joesph's, Father Stan was busy going over the words for the ceremony as we awaited the arrival of the bridesmaids and then the bride.

The service was lovely, Father Stan quite charming. He revealed later this was his first wedding conducted in english, he made a fine job of it. The candles provided another moment of laughter!

Some rain meant there was no lingering outside the church. The weather certainly didn't put us off from a stop for pictures, neither did heavy traffic or a show at the park.

An amusing contrast in this scene.

The marquee in the garden looked beautiful, so much effort had gone into the interior.

I was excited to spot this little detail, the flowers in the pool had gently blown into one corner, perfect with rain drops over them.

Everyone enjoyed some amusing speeches, the best man had certainly gone into a lot of effort to inform us of some colourful moments in Simon's life!

As night fell the marquee looked spectacular in the garden. The fun continued inside.

The dancing continued until late with lots of energy. Below is one of my favourite images of recent times, minimal lighting and just a hint of colour but it sums up the mood for me.

Finally time to say goodnight.

Nia & Matt

This was a wedding I had been looking forward to for a long time. This delightful couple had booked me quite a while ago and despite them living outside Guernsey, we got to know each other pretty well. What helped a lot was the full day we spent together shooting a whole variety of pictures earlier in the spring for their beautiful engagement album. I never actually blogged the engagement shoot, I may catch up with this in the quieter months coming up, but some of the images were on display with the projection at the reception.

There were some lovely details, so we start with a little grouping of some of these.

The groomsmen were very relaxed and jovial as they got ready, it took Matt a little while to get fully into his uniform. He really did cut a dashing figure.

There was a lot of activity back at the Grande Mare Hotel where the bride was getting ready. The couple have five sisters between them, just perfect as the bridesmaids. They all looked great together.

I am sure all the bridesmaids look to be in step with each other, this would not have been accidental! I wonder if Matt planned this?

A moving ceremony followed, the choir was a really nice touch. Colour co-ordinated too!

We were treated to some eloquent and amusing speeches.

The first dance was another special time. I like the way the red lighting complimented Matt's sash.

We broke off briefly for a few minutes to take some pictures across the road. I had being wanting to shoot something like this image for a long time, so it was great to be able to do so and to come away with something that matched my vision so well. As the best man can attest, no photoshop trickery involved, these images are really straight as shot. I am a firm believer in getting as much right in camera as possible. A couple of the compositions we achieved are below.

Back to the dancing to see the evening out.

Mandy & Peter

What a fun wedding Mandy and Peter had. They planned something a bit different and it all ended up as a perfect day. They got the legalities completed at the Greffe in the afternoon, this was then followed by a drink of champagne at the OGH.

You won't see any happier couple walking down the steps.

The next day we all started at the beach first thing in the morning for more champagne.

Then the preparations started for the remainder of the day.

The Humanist blessing took place at the Clarence Battery, what a spectacular and beautiful location! The wind from the previous day's rehearsal had died away, the sighs of the sea accompanied the ceremony.

One can get a good idea of the location from this fisheye shot, I had to be careful and remember where I was. This was the circle when the rings were passed around.

A pretty dramatic kiss ensued!

It was then onto Mum's place for the reception. A tight squeeze around the garden but a lovely atmosphere. I love the next photograph, I always get excited with the possibilities given some beautiful light.

I think you'll all agree it was worth the effort of rounding up this crowd for a group photograph.

The speeches took place outdoors after dark. It was a challenging day for us with harsh, contrasty conditions early in the day, then this. But the conditions also gave some different opportunities.

Mum - you gave one of the most heart felt speeches I have ever heard.

Once again the first dance was exceptional, full of emotion. This was how the tango was meant to be done.

The onlookers were delighted.

A few things may have been a bit of a last minute rush, but Mandy and Peter you truly had a special day.

Laura & James

Another wonderful wedding from a busy weekend. Sorry if you have waited a little while for this blog, but I am sure you will agree the wait will have been worth it. Laura, her sister and two cousins all got ready together, very efficiently and with a good sense of fun. I was really pleased to capture these two fleeting moments, great moments and compositions.

I also love this juxtaposition.

James also had a busy morning, a trip to the airport, setting up a slideshow and of course getting ready himself. Here he gets a few tips on how to do his tie before going to the church.

A few jokes started the service off well, flying jokes set the scene of the day.

I was lucky to get the next picture, as an errant guest stood right in front of the couple as they came down the aisle! Enjoy the service and let me take the photographs for the couple please.

We braved the breeze on the common before heading to the Bella Luce Hotel for a lovely reception. The marquee looked beautiful inside and out.

The couple used a red Porsche as their transport, as one guest suggested a lovely wedding present from Dad! I had to use the car as a prop for a few ring shots. We were all entertained by great speeches, there was no need to worry beforehand, the best man's speech was quite special.

As night fell the dancing started with a highly photogenic first dance. When the band had to stop everyone moved indoors for even more! A memorable day.

Abbie & Kieran

Abbie & Kieran's wedding last weekend was a great event. Abbie had booked me a very long time in advance and was clearly very organised. At the rehearsal it was apparent that the event would be great fun, 6 bridesmaids and an even larger number of groomsmen all in pretty high spirits.

The hair and make up was all done at Abbie's house, there was quite a crowd.

It is surprising what portraits can be created in a small space in a short time. I am aware of light and aim to make the most of what is available, Abbie certainly looked stunning.

The guys were full of humour and banter, it was a bit hot to get into suits too early.

The humour continued at the Vale Church, the Reverend there is always on great form. The congregation were often laughing out loud.

A quick stop for a few pictures along the coast and then to the Farmhouse for the reception.

Dad needs a helping hand to ensure the microphone doesn't keep slipping down!

It's always fun to get out and see what pictures we can come up with.

As expected the evening part of the day was very energetic, dancing to City Limits was always going to be popular. Great rendition of Pink Floyd's The Wall guys.

It's wonderful to see the groom and new father in law enjoying themselves together.

Stacey & Paul

Stacey & Paul's wedding was a bit different, a very relaxed and informal event. We started with the legal part of the marriage at the Greffe first thing in the morning. This was followed by a few more preparations for a humanist ceremony and reception at the Bella Luce.

The initial plan to have the ceremony outdoors in the garden was changed due to the weather. But the marquee proved to be a great location for Plan B. The bridesmaids had a lot of fun all day, Ellie in particular appeared to have endless energy.

The caricaturist proved popular!

Stacey & Paul are keen on nature and I wanted to try to reflect this in some of the pictures.

Now what did you write in my speech darling?

We had the chance to pop out for a brief picture opportunity in the evening, this was well worthwhile.
Notable was the sighting of a perigrine falcon swopping just past the couple, a wonderful experience for such lovers of birds.

The marquee looked splendid as the night drew in.

A lovely first dance and some great folk music rounded off their special day.

Nicky & Ollie

Nicky & Ollie had a good practice for their wedding, they were at Karlie & Dan's that I photographed the week before! I was grateful that their preparations were all concentrated around the L'Eree area, I didn't have far to go between the bride's house and where the groom was getting ready, then just a short hop to St. Peter's Church.

The dress looked lovely with the backlighting.

The groomsmen were in jovial spirits, got ready promptly which left plenty of time for a pint and game of pool. Here proud mum just couldn't resist the final tie adjustment.

What a great shot this is, I mean my photograph that is! Though the standard of pool on display did hint at many mis-spent hours!

Onto the church for a lovely service. St. Peter's Church brings back a few memories, we got married there 21 1/2 years ago.

That's an impressive cloud of confetti.

A few pictures in a garden and then down to Fort Grey, an area with a lot of meaning to the newly weds. I am really pleased with the beautiful pictures we achieved there, all in a few minutes too. I always love putting my landscape experience to good use when I get a chance to in weddings.

Then across the island to the Old Government House Hotel for the remainder of the day.

The cake was very special, it was skillfully and beautifully made to mimic the bride's dress.

Dancing was to The States, I look forward to their performances when I am working.

The groomsmen did assure me they don't make a habit of this!

Karlie & Dan

I felt I knew Karlie and Dan very well by the time we got to their wedding. I first met them at a wedding just over a year ago, Dan was chaffeur to Juzy & Chris and even carried my camera bag when we stopped off for a few pictures. We also met 3 times to shoot their stunning engagement album which served as a guest book at their wedding. So with a few meetings thrown in to discuss their plans, we were all familiar with each other. I always value any time with my clients and encourage meetings and engagement sessions, it all helps on the day.

I started at the hairdressers and followed Karlie as she got ready.

Karlie and her mum look so similar. I really enjoy the image of Karlie in the mirror which her mum was holding, a very powerful and meaningful picture. Both looked beautiful of course!

Dan certainly needed that pre-ceremony drink, a more nervous groom I haven't seen! But what was there to worry about? Karlie looked so lovely walking up the aisle.

That was a great chaffeur you arranged there Dan! It was nice to see you again Colin.
For pictures on the way to the reception we stopped off at Gran's house. This was all we wanted, a beautiful interior and a small, but very pretty enclosed garden.

The reception was held at The Venue, always a good choice.

Great speeches, even Diddly Duck made a guest appearance, poor Diddly!

I certainly am grateful you did do a first dance as I am delighted with the beautiful pictures that resulted.

What a fantastic day. I look forward to showing you the rest of the pictures on your return from honeymoon.

Charlotte & Ian

Each wedding is special and many have some characteristics that make them notable. Undoubtedly this one had a huge amount of preparation and attention to detail. The reception venue was probably the grandest I have seen. But more of that later.
Charlotte got ready nice and early, this gave us a relaxed time and plenty of opportunity for some portraits of her and her family.

The groomsmen on the other hand had different ways of occupying themselves.

I was struck by this scene as the car parked under the arch to take the beautiful bride to the church.

The service followed at the Vale Church, the rector kept nerves at bay with his jovial manner.

The weather was perfect for the drinks reception at Candie Gardens.

It was just a short walk down the hill to St. James for the main reception. This building is one of Guernsey's most special venues and the interior looked truly spectacular. Even more so at night in my opinion as you will see lower down.

The lighting was perfect to show off the beautiful cake. The speeches entertained everybody and the evening fun began with the bouquet throw and dancing. What an atmospheric setting this proved.

The Devotees got people dancing the remainder of the night away, it was good to appreicate a band like this with the fine acoustics of the hall.

Lindsay & Nigel

Lindsay & Nigel's recent wedding was a joy to photograph for us. As normal, I started with the bride getting ready, this was easier to cover as Lucy did the bride's hair and make up at home, less running around for me.

This moment is lovely as Lindsay's dad sees her looking so beautiful. The timing of the touching hands was the decisive moment for me to press the shutter.

It's amazing pictures one can capture in about 30 seconds!

Meanwhile Karen was covering the groomsmen having a quick drink, or two! Last minute speech writing was also evident. The picture of young Luke cleverly spotted through the empty glasses is one of my favourites.

Onto the church, the floral theme of the day was sunflowers. Coincidently it was Jenny Falla doing sunflowers for the second week running in consecutive weddings for me.

The first time the couple see each other at the front of the church is always a special moment. The church was so full, it was difficult to find a gap to get a clear view of Lindsay and Nigel looking so lovingly at each other.

Rings are always a challenge to photograph and I enjoy trying to do something creative with them, a patch of light and use of shadow makes this clever composition.

The VW van was a very practical mode of transport and we briefly visited Petit Bot for a couple of pictures on the way to the reception.

The reception was held at the Jerbourg hotel. The weather on the day was fairly dull and grey, good for family portraits as excessive contrast can be a problem otherwise. I wouldn't normally post an image like this shot of the whole wedding party on the blog, but the lighting and garden behind give a very attractive quality.

The noisiest table contained most of the groomsmen, the whole atmosphere was very jovial. I must add that Nigel's groomsmen were some of the most pleasant and helpful people we have come across. They were attentive with their duties throughout the whole day.

After the very entertaining speeches we had a special cake to be cut. The couple had a vision of what they wanted for their cake, various people were responsible for various parts of it. The end result was perfect, check out the remarkable resemblance to the couple on top of the cake!

The first dance took place to music from The States, this band never fail to get people rocking!

During a break between sets, we took a short walk to create this stunning image. The fog rolled in and it was rather wet so I had to work fast. When I see this image, it was exactly what I had in mind, the beams of light in the mist were an added bonus. I can still hear the piercing sound of the fog horn when I see this picture.

More dancing finished off the day. Lindsay and Nigel had a day to be proud of to start their married life.
